Blue Lake

Blue LakeThe Blue Lake (Tikitapu) is one of the closest lakes to Rotorua. Its clear blue waters are popular with water skiers, swimmers and boaties. An easy walking track circles the lake taking in beautiful beaches, native bush and the exotic conifers of Whakarewarewa Forest. There are good views over Blue Lake and the nearby Green Lake (Rotokakahi).


The beaches and surrounding grassed areas at the reserve are popular for picnics. Barbecue sites and rubbish bins are provided. There is a boat ramp at the northern end of the lake, with ample parking.

Swimming is safe at the broad pumice sand beach. The water slide is popular with children. A lookout point on the south-western corner provides views over Lakes Tikitapu and Rotokakahi.

Public toilets are provided at the beach at the reserve.

Going in a clockwise direction, the track begins at the north-east end of the Lake. Head along the shore and follow the roadside section south, watching for oncoming traffic.

About a third of the way, the track enters the bush, following the lake until coming to a secluded beach at the south end. Head up the stairs to the car park and take a right to continue around the lake.

The track continues at this elevation heading north through Whakarewarewa Forest. The track slowly descends into native bush to the lake level and exits at the north-eastern side of the beach.

At the northern side of the lake is a boat ramp. The Blue Lake beaches and surrounding grassed areas are all popular for summer picnics. Facilities include toilets, rubbish bins, a children's playground, barbecues and swimming areas.


Blue Lake is 9 km south-east of Rotorua, via Te Ngae Road then Tarawera Road.
